When most people hear Peridot, they immediately think of August.
As an August baby myself, I understand the connection. Peridot is my birthstone, and its unmistakable green color has always made it feel like our stone. But the more I've worked with genuine gemstones, the more I've come to appreciate Peridot for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the month on the calendar.
Peridot has a fascinating history, beautiful natural variation, and symbolism centered around joy, renewal, and lightness. In my Gemstone Guide, I describe Peridot with those same ideas: joy, lightness, and emotional release.
And while Peridot makes incredibly meaningful August birthstone jewelry, you certainly don't need an August birthday to wear it.
What Is Peridot?
Peridot is the gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, and one of the things that makes it especially interesting is its color.
Unlike gemstones that can naturally occur in many different colors, Peridot is known for green. Depending on its composition and the individual stone, that green can range from a lighter yellow-green to a richer olive or grass green.
Peridot also has a long history. The gemstone has been treasured for thousands of years, with some of the earliest known mining associated with the Egyptian island of Zabargad in the Red Sea. Throughout history, it has sometimes even been confused with Emerald because of its green color.
Today, Peridot is still loved for that signature bright green, but I think its natural variation is one of the most interesting parts of working with it.
Why Does Peridot Look Different From One Piece to Another?
This is something I talk about often because it's important to understand when you're buying natural gemstone jewelry.
Natural gemstones aren't manufactured to look identical.
They're formed by nature.
That means the Peridot in one necklace may not look exactly like the Peridot in another. One stone might be a brighter lime green. Another might have more golden undertones. Some may appear clearer, while others may contain natural inclusions.
Even gemstone strands I purchase from the same supplier at the same quality level can look different from one order to the next.
And that's normal.
Actually, it's one of the things I love most about working with genuine gemstones.
Natural Variation Doesn't Automatically Mean Lower Quality
There's an important distinction between variation and quality.
When I'm sourcing gemstones for The Always Busy Mama, I intentionally select AA and AAA-quality stones whenever possible. I'm looking at characteristics such as color, clarity, cut, polish, consistency, and the overall beauty of the strand.
But AA or AAA doesn't mean every natural stone is going to be an exact duplicate of the one beside it.
Peridot is still Peridot.
Natural inclusions, subtle differences in color, and slight variations between stones are part of working with a material created in the earth rather than a material created to be perfectly uniform in a factory.
I think understanding that makes natural gemstone jewelry even more special.
Your necklace doesn't have to look exactly like someone else's.
Neither does your bracelet.
And the Peridot I source next year may look slightly different from the Peridot I'm working with today.
That's part of its story.
What Does Peridot Symbolize?
Peridot has developed many symbolic associations throughout its long history. Today, it is commonly connected with renewal, positivity, joy, and growth.

I also include it as a stone for the "motherhood in the middle" years, when patience, perspective, changing relationships, and finding yourself within a new season of motherhood can feel especially relevant.
As with all gemstone symbolism, I don't believe a gemstone determines who you are or magically changes your circumstances. I think the meaning we attach to it can serve as a reminder.
Maybe Peridot reminds you to find the joy again.
Maybe it represents a fresh chapter.
Maybe it celebrates someone you love who was born in August.
Or maybe you simply saw that gorgeous green and thought, That's the one.
That's meaningful, too.
Peridot Is More Than an August Birthstone
Of course, Peridot is traditionally recognized as the August birthstone, which makes Peridot jewelry a beautiful gift for an August birthday.
But one of the things I want women to know about birthstones is that the calendar doesn't have to dictate what you wear.
You might wear Peridot because your child was born in August and you want to carry a small reminder of them with you.
You might choose it to represent an August anniversary, birthday, or milestone.
You might be drawn to its symbolism during a season when you're craving renewal and a little more joy.
And you might choose it simply because green is your color.

But I can't—and don't want to—make nature perfectly uniform.
Your Peridot may have a slightly different shade of green.
Your stone may have an inclusion another doesn't.
Your necklace may look a little different from the photograph you saw online.
That's not something I want to hide.
It's something I want you to understand and appreciate when you choose genuine gemstone jewelry.
Because meaningful jewelry doesn't have to be identical to be beautiful.
And neither do we.
